Biofilters are the difference between life and death for your fish ponds. You need clean healthy water.
Summary from a chapter of "Your Pond: Crystal Clear Water Guaranteed" - Generally speaking a garden pond has too many fish for its own good. - The waste products build up in the water unless they are continuously removed. The primary job of a biofilter is to convert ammonia (or ammonium) to nitrites and then to nitrates using very specific bacteria types. I have no personal experience of this type of filter (fluid bed type) which I think is used extensively in some countries. However based upon chemical engineering principles this type of filter should do an excellent job. - This chapter has gone on a bit but hopefully if you read it until you fully understand the principles described you will have a great appreciation of what is needed to get any biofilter to work better and it will not cost you very much if anything. - The pleasure from your pond, the health and size of your fish, the appearance of your plants is based upon your biofilter working optimally.
